Detox Rituals

Wake up early

Holistic health care begins with the identification and elimination of accumulated toxic wastes in your body. With modern medicine focusing on curative therapies, little do we realize that our bodies have become toxic because of the continuous accumulation of toxic substances. Exposure to environmental pollution, intake of processed food with chemicals and preservatives, and consumption of fruits and vegetables with a heavy load of pesticides, are some of the causes for the toxin accumulation. These toxins are stored in our cells, tissue, blood, and brain. The more the toxic load in your body, the lesser is your immunity, making you very susceptible to diseases such as cancer, diabetes, liver disorders, kidney disease, and obesity.

Now that you understand the damage caused by toxins in your body, let’s understand the various detoxifying rituals that are available. These detoxifying rituals are generally simple tips to change your lifestyle, kitchen remedies, and detoxifying recipes.

Here is a list of daily detox rituals that you can adopt. Follow as many as you can.

Wake up early

The first step for detoxifying is to start following the practice of waking up early. This calls for some lifestyle changes, but nevertheless reaps big dividends. Respect the body’s biological clock. Empty your bowel and bladder early morning so that the toxins leave your body and do not flow back.

Oil pulling

You may be familiar with this ayurvedic practice followed in India. In the morning, on an empty stomach take a spoon of sesame oil and swish it in your mouth for about 15 minutes, without swallowing. Spit it into the trash can. Gargle your mouth with water and brush your teeth normally. Oil pulling destroys harmful bacteria and fungi in the mouth, thus eliminating toxins right in the mouth and preventing them from entering the body.

Drinking lemon water

Begin your morning with a glass of warm water with a dash of lemon. This is a gentle but effective way to cleanse the liver, improve digestion, and also aid weight loss. Lemon water helps remove toxins by stimulating the gall bladder. It also helps maintain acid-alkaline balance in your body.

Dry skin brushing

A good way to scrape off dead skin is to indulge in dry skin brushing. Use a brush with hard vegetable fibre. Before showering, rub the brush gently on your skin in circular motions right from the feet up to your chest. Rub in a direction towards the heart. This practice promotes good blood circulation whilst also exfoliating the skin.

Bathe with Epsom salt

Indulge in an Epsom salt bath. Add some Epsom salt with a tablespoon of baking soda to warm water. You may also add any essential oil of your choice. Allow your body to sweat while the salt and the minerals draw the toxins out of your body.

Consume greens all through the day

Spit it into the trash can. Gargle your mouth with water and brush your teeth normally. Oil pulling destroys harmful bacteria and fungi in the mouth, thus eliminating toxins right in the mouth and preventing them from entering the body.

Practice yoga and meditation

These age old practices are very effective in removing toxins from your body. Yoga in particular helps improve lymphatic flow to ensure elimination of toxic wastes. Suryanamaskar or sun salutation is one of the healthiest things to do every morning. Set aside at least 10 minutes for meditation, whenever it is possible during the day. It helps cleanse your mind, body, and soul.

Integrate some of these practices into your daily routine and get started with detoxifying and rejuvenating your body. Happy detoxifying!
